After a debilitating two year break, VegFest is back and better than ever. Bringing people together with entertaining lectures and engaging events, VegMichigan is a nonprofit organization and a huge contributor to the rapidly growing plant-based community. Although VegFest was a huge success in the city of Detroit and the “Largest veg-friendly event in Michigan”, there are definitely criticisms to be made for an event that has such a significant impact on the health and well-being of one of America’s food deserts. With opinions varying from organizers at Action for Animals to regular attendees leading a plant-based lifestyle, this article provides full coverage on the highs, lows, and in-betweens at VegFest this year.

Despite VegFest attendees saying it was “Gratifying to see there’s so many people supporting vegan causes”, space did become an apparent issue at the event. In particular the outdoor sheds at Eastern Market were so congested that the quality of interaction between vendors and patrons was largely impacted. However, if you stuck out the lines or came early enough to get the chance to connect directly with vendors, you would see it was well worth it. Not only did this event give Detroiters a chance to enjoy delicious plant-based food, it was a rewarding social experience for people looking to make further connections in the vegan community.
Another aspect of VegFest worth mentioning were the educational opportunities presented at the event. Although VegFest may seem exclusive to those practicing animal advocacy and plant-based nutrition, the experience was equally inclusive to those unfamiliar with veganism thanks to the several various nonprofits there. With organizations such as Action for Animals and SASHA Farms, participants were able to learn about animal advocacy, the nutritional benefits behind eating plant-based, as well as the environmental effects. From a vendor's perspective, Brece from Action for Animals says, “We think our Trivia Wheel offered folks a cool opportunity to learn more about veganism and the injustices within animal agriculture.” There was also a designated area powered by VegMichigan, with a large collection of informative fliers covering niche topics. The only thing that could have pushed VegFest to the next level would be incorporating guest speakers. This may encourage further engagement with attendees and as a result be more influential. There were also very minimal vendors solely promoting cruelty-free products. An increase in businesses specializing in this area of veganism may help reinforce the ethical reasoning motivating the cause.
Beyond surface-level enjoyment, gatherings like these have the potential to motivate communities and individuals alike. My take away from VegFest: if you are passionate about a cause, it is worthwhile to pursue a movement larger than yourself.
